TikTok Will Now Label Content Created by External AI Tools

TikTok is introducing new measures to enhance transparency regarding the use of AI in content creation. They will now label content modified by external AI tools and provide resources to educate users on the implications of generative AI.

Collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), TikTok will identify AI-modified content uploaded from other sources with special tags in-stream. This builds upon their existing practice of labeling content generated using their own AI tools.

While these efforts aim to empower users with more oversight, it’s important to note that not all AI projects are part of this initiative, potentially leaving gaps in metadata markers. Nevertheless, this move signifies progress in increasing transparency surrounding AI-generated content, which is crucial given the proliferation of AI-generated media online.

TikTok is also partnering with MediaWise to develop educational campaigns on AI media literacy, furthering efforts to help users distinguish AI content.

With AI-generated content increasingly prevalent, especially during sensitive times like elections, these steps are vital in combating misinformation and promoting awareness of AI’s capabilities and limitations.

Overall, TikTok’s initiatives represent a commendable effort to enhance AI literacy and mitigate the risks associated with AI-generated content.
